Michelangelo

An overkill of michelangelo the past few weeks. Have been reading up on renaissance art like I had an exam on the same or something. Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael were amongst the most prolific and talented of all the renaissance artists.

The movie “The Third Man” had this line: “in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love – they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock. ” Its true! The pieta is one of the most amazing works of art I have ever seen (in pictures, that is). Its also the only object that has made me wish I were born a christian rather than a hindu. You need a love of the religion to be able to truly appreciate the look on Mary’s face- strong, sad, beautiful… Its simply awesome.

Michelangelo’s David is simply terrific, though I am personally more fond of the Pieta. Accompanying the David, is a statue of Hercules by Bandinelli. Bandinelli has generally been portrayed as low in talent and considerably high on self-importance :). The story goes that when the block for the Hercules that was being transported fell into the river, Florence went about saying that “the block jumped into to Arno upon hearing it was to be mutiliated by Bandinelli”! I wish I could travel to Italy!! The Sistine should be simply super, especially now that it has been restored.

My wish list:

A visit to Egypt, Jordan & Jerusalem

A visit to Italy

A nice big easel- Come what may, I am just not able to splurge on an easel- seems like such a waste.

A course on painting & drawing

Camera! Now this is one thing that’s going to come out of my wish list- Will definitely buy one soon- a nice cam like the one my brother-in-law has. He has a minolta, with two-three flashes, zoom lenses, what not, the works. I don’t want a digicam, somehow. Only a cam like athimber’s! A camera phone would be nice- I could carry it around with me, though. Suresh loves handycams, but I remain true to the staid old cameras. Still photographs have a charm that just cannot be matched by moving videos, don’t you think?
